The nature of narcotics is to be addictive as they have an effect that makes us want more. This can be debilitating to the point that they are your sole concern and focus and take over your life where nothing else matters other than feeding the habit. The best way to avoid this is to keep occupied with something that is productive as this reduces the need.

This is a good video on addiction from SciShow: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ukFjH9odsXw

It’s all to do with how the molecules affect your brain- and if your brain decides it thinks you need that molecule. You can’t really stop something from being addictive but you can treat addiction by slowly weaning people off drugs. Therapy is also very helpful because it helps you to heal your own psychological illness caused by drug use.
