We make drugs of all sorts of shapes and sizes in my group, one of our best is a banana shape!

I haven’t made a drug yet (I’ve only been a scientist for a couple of years, and it can take a long time!). I did make a molecule that glowed bright yellow in the light, and bright blue in UV light which was really cool!

I was previously involved in development of a ‘non-antibiotic’ antibiotic. it was designed to treat clostridium dificile (a bacterial infection, typically picked up in hospitals) by binding the toxins produced and passing them out of the patients system. It would have been a big breakthrough if we could have got it to work but when we compared it in a clinical trial to more traditional antibiotics, it was not quite as effective and the project was stopped…pity!
